The word Compositive is a blend of the words composition and positive which encapsulate the vision of our school. Our approach to learning is inquiry and strength-based, helping children discover, develop, and build upon their strengths, talents, and passions. We achieve this by looking for the assets of all of our students.

WELCOME
The name of a school typically tells a story, which is certainly the case at Compositive Primary. So much so that our name conveys the school’s fundamental beliefs about learning and the transformational impact we have on the lives of children and their families.
The word’s root is composition, meaning we are all connected to each other. This characterizes our school community and our belief in whole child education; we educate children’s cognitive, emotional, social, and physical lives.
The second half of the word is positive, expressing our recognition that children thrive in a positive and wholesome environment. Our approach to learning is strength-based, meaning we help children discover, develop, and build upon their strengths, interests, talents, and passions. We achieve this by looking for the positive in each other.
The Compositive Model organizes learning into Domains and Capacities in an inquiry-based model that nurtures children’s natural curiosity, encourages self-directed discovery, and celebrates the joy of learning.

FACULTY & ADMIN TEAM
Originally from Los Angeles, California, Ellen might be considered a mobile learner. She has served in a variety of different educational roles as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, Chief Academic Officer, and professor in a variety of locations: Puerto Rico, Tucson, Albuquerque, Boulder, and Denver. She received her BA from Colorado State University, her MA from University of Arizona, and her PhD from University of New Mexico. Her traditional learning was enriched by her students and faculty through the years. In her free time, Ellen enjoys spending time with her family and friends, especially watching her grandchildren grow, running, biking, and generally being outside. She loves to travel physically and internally. She’s in two book groups because she loves to read, and two groups devoted to equity and social justice because she believes when we know better we do better. To enjoy life and contribute more, she wishes there were additional hours in the day. She is honored to bring her experience and passion to Compositive Primary this year. Amira joined the Compositive team in 2019 as the founding ECE Lead Teacher and returned in 2022 as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Innovation. Amira holds a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University and an M.A. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Colorado Denver. Amira began her career in early childhood here in Denver, teaching at a non-profit preschool for three years. During her time there, she held various leadership roles including assistant director and manager of curriculum and family engagement. Amira holds a State of Colorado Coaching Credential and has coached preschool teachers in one of Denver’s largest Early/Head Start programs, supporting them in their professional growth and creating a quality educational experience for their students. Amira believes that every child deserves the highest education possible. She is invested in serving the needs of all children and bringing creativity, diversity and most importantly, joy in the preschool classroom. As a self-proclaimed foodie, you can find Amira exploring Denver’s plethora of fantastic food options with her husband and daughter, and planning her next big adventure in her free time. Averi grew up in Chicago and attended the Chicago Waldorf School for 13 years, which inspired Averi’s passion for education and impacting positive change in the world. With 10 years of experience in the field of private education at the Green Meadow Waldorf School in Chestnut Ridge, NY, Averi’s background includes admissions, philanthropy, event production, as well as a performance art, called eurythmy, where sound and tone are made visible through movement. Averi earned her B.A. in German Studies and Studio Art from Lewis and Clark College, in Portland, OR, followed by the 4-year training in eurythmy in Chestnut Ridge, NY. Averi is new to the Denver area and looks forward to working with the Compositive Primary community, and helping new families discover the school. As an adventure enthusiast with a passion for sustainability, Averi enjoys exploring the amazing natural settings in Colorado and finding ways to incorporate sustainability into her everyday life. When not exploring the mountains with her partner, Jordan, you can find Averi trying new recipes in her kitchen, rocking out to classic rock, working on a jigsaw puzzle, crafting, day dreaming about pet ownership, or enjoying time with her family (especially her two young nieces).Interim Head of School

Heather Rose Aguilera
Heather Rose Aguilera (“Heather Rose”) joined Compositive Primary’s team in 2021 as its facility manager. She spent four years at Denver Public Schools doing similar work. She loves being active during the day, juggling multiple projects, and interacting with people.
Heather Rose is a Colorado native and comes from a large family. Outside of work, her passion is baking and she hopes to go back to school to focus on baking and open her own bakery one day. Her favorite dessert to make is a tarte tatin! She also keeps busy doing CrossFit workouts six days a week.

Absinthe Algaier
Absinthe brings to Compositive a perspective developed by an international upbringing. She has lived in 5 different countries throughout her life and enjoys exploring and teaching through a lens inspired by a worldview that celebrates the unique strengths brought forth by every individual!
Absinthe’s career in education began nine years ago in Thailand, where she discovered her love of teaching at Singapore International School, a tri-lingual program in the heart of Bangkok. She developed her teaching practice by obtaining an M.Ed in International Teaching through Framingham State University in 2015. After a quick move to Denver, she received her MA in Education and Human Development with a concentration in Early Literacy from a joint program through the University of Colorado and the Boulder Journey School. In Colorado, Absinthe has worked at Open Air Academy, a Reggio-inspired Pre-K program in RiNo, where she taught in a mixed-age classroom, as well as the Denver Jewish Community Center’s Early Learning School, another Reggio-inspired ECE program where she was the head-teacher for a classroom full of curious 3 and 4-year-olds.
When she is not in the classroom, Absinthe enjoys cooking and eating the spiciest foods she can endure, swimming, painting, reading, traveling, and spending quality time with her partner.

Nour Beck
Nour Beck is originally from Damascus, Syria. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from University of Northern Colorado and her Directors Certificate in ECE. She has been working with children for over ten years, six years at Aurora Public School. She believes that meeting the needs of students starts with knowing who they are. She chose teaching because working with children is her passion! Working with students and seeing them learn and grow throughout the school year brings her such joy. Nour loves being able to find different ways to connect with each child. She enjoys seeing the children’s smiling faces each day as they are reaching new milestones. Nour’s spirit leads her to help children work with each other and she feels great joy when children develop stronger relationships with their peers. She enjoys watching children learn to regulate their emotions and express their feelings. It is wonderful watching them solve their problems independently.
Outside of the classroom, Nour likes to travel and explore new places, volunteer, and help others. She loves cooking, crafting, camping, and spending time with her husband, their two children, and friends. Nour also loves gardening! Hands in the soil have definite stress-busting benefits. Painting stones is also what she loves most, as it helps to convey information in an artistic way.

Kathia is an accomplished educator with a strong academic background and a passion for teaching and inspiring students. With dedication to lifelong learning and a commitment to excellence in education, Kathia has attained both undergraduate and master’s degrees in the field of education.
She began her educational journey in California at Azusa Pacific University, where she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. During her undergraduate years, she immersed herself in a diverse range of courses, acquiring a solid foundation in pedagogy, designed units, and classroom management. Kathia went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Teaching at Relay Graduate School of Education in Colorado. Throughout her master’s program, she delved deeper into advanced teaching techniques. She engaged in field experience and collaborated with fellow educators to explore innovative instructional approaches.
Alongside her academic pursuits, Kathia actively sought out opportunities to gain practical teaching experience. She completed fellowships at Teach for America and charter schools, where she had the opportunity to apply her knowledge and pedagogical skills in real-world classroom settings. Her experiences further shaped her teaching philosophy and reinforced her commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Kathia firmly believes in the transformative power of education and its ability to empower individuals and shape communities. She strives to create a nurturing and engaging learning environment where students can develop their skills, explore their interests, and reach their full potential. Kathia is deeply committed to ongoing professional growth and is an advocate for lifelong learning.

Julianna Inman
Julianna Inman joins the Compositive Primary faculty as the lead teacher in the Lily Room for the 2024-2025 school year. She received her Master’s in Early Childhood Education at CU Denver while studying at the acclaimed Boulder Journey School. She has been an ECE Teacher for over five years and has loved every minute.
Julianna has experience in both the Reggio Emilia and Montessori approach to teaching, and has worked in many different educational settings, with all kinds of people. She loves to teach through music, art, and movement, and especially loves exploring the outdoors.
When not teaching, Julianna love to bike around the park near her apartment, play the ukulele, or give her dog Bunni lots of belly rubs.
3rd/4th/5th Grade Lead Teacher
Lindsey Grayson
Lindsey joined the Compositive Team during the 2021-2022 school year as a K/1 Lead Teacher and is now taking on the 3rd/4th/5th Grade Lead Teacher position. Lindsey brings with them their experience as a 2nd Grade Lead Teacher at a charter school in Denver. They hold a B.A. in Elementary Education and Special Education from Southern New Hampshire University and an M.A. in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education.
Lindsey was born and raised in Massachusetts. After completing their undergraduate degree, they relocated to Denver to complete a teaching fellowship and residency program while obtaining their masters degree. Through this fellowship Lindsey had the opportunity to teach both Kindergarten and 2nd grade students. They provided a rigorous education in math, literacy, and English Language Development. Lindsey believes that students deserve high expectations, agency, and trauma informed teaching to reach their fullest potential both academically and socially.
Their career in teaching has taken place in a variety of settings from traditional public schools, innovation schools, charters, private/independent schools and multiple abroad experiences. With this knowledge and experience they bring diverse perspectives on teaching into the classroom offering both a structured and innovative approach for students to thrive.
In their free time you can find Lindsey engaging in art, hiking, movie going, and game nights. They are energized by the Compositive inquiry model and are excited to grow and develop alongside their curious learners!

Danny Goodman
Danny joined the Compositive team in 2019, after relocating to Denver from New York City. As a performer and theater artist, he combines his passion for theater and music with his love of learning. He previously taught and served as music director with Brooklyn Acting Lab for four years with children of all ages. He is excited to foster opportunities for Compositive students to learn and grow through imaginative play and creative discovery.
After completing his BA in theater from College of the Holy Cross, Danny toured with Hampstead Stage Co. bringing theater to elementary schools and public libraries across the country. He subsequently received his MFA in acting from the American Repertory Theater/Moscow Art Theater Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University, where he had the opportunity to study and perform in Russia. As an actor he has performed all over the U.S. and abroad. He is also a co-founder of CRASH Theater Co. in New York with his wife and schoolmates.
Outside the classroom, Danny enjoys exploring the Colorado outdoors with his wife: hiking, camping, kayaking, and playing tennis. He likes to have a guitar or mandolin nearby whenever possible.

FOUNDING TEAM
Founder
Betsy Callaway Considine
Betsy Callaway Considine is a leader in education reform. She is committed to serving the Colorado community and has served on a variety of boards, including the Catholic Foundation, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Denver Botanic Gardens, Regis Jesuit High School, Ricks Center for Gifted Children at the University of Denver, Seeds of Hope Foundation, and the Women’s Foundation of Colorado. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a master’s in business administration from Harvard.
Betsy is the founder of Compositive, a national movement focused on “whole child” education for grades K-12. This new education model is based on peer reviewed research, as well as the principle of increasing children’s capacities to reflect and learn, recognize and act, care and connect, and engage and serve. This integrated approach empowers children to lead lives of personal excellence. In conjunction with her work on Compositive, Betsy is launching a unique Pre-K – 5th grade school in 2019. It features a student-driven, inquiry-based educational program. The Compositive school focuses on helping children develop critical thinking skills, flexibility, resilience, internal motivation and a commitment to service.
In addition to education innovation, Betsy’s experience covers the worlds of politics, religion, community service, women’s issues, ranching and family. She worked on multiple presidential campaigns, did a stint in the White House and ran her own construction company.
Betsy was born and raised in rural Georgia, and her family’s roots go back seven generations in Harris County. She is married to entrepreneur and former Colorado State Senator Terry Considine. The Considines, who have lived in Colorado for 38 years, enjoy spending time at their ranch in Western Colorado with their three adult children and their families.

Norma Hafenstein, Ph.D.
Norma Hafenstein, PhD is the Daniel L. Ritchie Endowed Chair in Gifted Education, Teaching and Learning Sciences Department, Morgridge College of Education, University of Denver. Dr. Hafenstein is lead faculty for gifted education, Full Clinical Professor in the Teaching and Learning Sciences department. She advises masters and doctoral degree students in education of the gifted and teaches graduate courses including Creativity: Theory and Practice, Psychological Aspects of the Gifted, Curriculum for the Gifted, Program Development, Leadership and Communication in Gifted Education, Instructional Strategies for the Gifted, Twice Exceptional Learners, and Research as Problem Identification, Intervention, and Application.
Dr. Hafenstein serves as a member of the Colorado Department of Education’s Gifted and Talented Endorsement Standards Committee. She consults with schools across the country providing teacher training, curriculum design, and program development. Dr. Hafenstein established the Institute for the Development of Gifted Education in 1998 through support from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation. In 1984, Dr. Hafenstein founded the Ricks Center for Gifted Children at the University of Denver and was director for 29 years. Dr. Hafenstein was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Emporia State University in 2012. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented in 2006 and in 2005, was presented with the Founder’s Day Distinguished Service to the University of Denver Award.
Currently, Dr. Hafenstein is co-principal investigator for the Right4Rural Project, a Javits federally-funded initiative to identify and serve giftedness in rural Colorado communities. Her research interests include identification of giftedness in underrepresented populations, information-processing styles, social and emotional development, program effectiveness, and adult and generational giftedness.

Heather B. Mock
An engaging and energetic leader, Heather Bushnell Mock is the founding head of school at Compositive Primary. In her 21 years as an educator, she has come to view herself as a “warm demander” and has grown to embrace the social and emotional development of the student as the most effective means to success in academics and life.
Heather’s experience covers the full primary through secondary journey, having taught and administered grades K-12. She comes to Compositive Primary from Dawson School in Lafayette, Colo. As associate head of school and K-8 director, she oversaw 270 students and 45 faculty members in both the middle and lower school divisions at Dawson. During her seven-year tenure, the school saw record levels of applicants, student retention and parental engagement. Prior to Dawson, Heather was an upper school class dean at Kent Denver School, shepherding the class of 2011 from their freshman year through successful graduation. She was responsible for everything from nurturing students’ academic achievement and character development, to serving as the main administrative point person for families and handling the logistical imperatives of class scheduling and discipline. Heather has also held teaching and/or administrative positions with progressively increasing responsibilities at The Maple Street School (Manchester, Vt.), The Head-Royce School (Oakland) and Sandia Preparatory School (Albuquerque).
She has served on four Association of Colorado Independent Schools (ACIS) reaccreditation teams and received multiple awards for excellence in teaching. Additionally, she has served on the boards of The Joshua School Boulder and Montview Community Preschool & Kindergarten.
A graduate of The Spence School in New York, Heather earned a bachelor’s degree in art history from Princeton University and a master’s degree in elementary education from Teachers College at Columbia University. She is also a graduate of the National Association of Independent Schools’ (NAIS) Aspiring Heads Institute. In addition, she attended the Harvard College Admissions Institute (2009) and spent a semester in Patagonia with the National Outdoor Leadership School (1992). Married with two teenage children, Heather is a marathon runner, has performed in community theater productions, and has been a certified Wilderness First Responder.

Amy Slothower
Amy Slothower is serving as the Executive Director of Compositive and oversees all planning and operations for the development of Compositive Primary as well as efforts to extend the Compositive reach. She is a management consultant whose focus is on nonprofit strategic planning. Her past clients include Children’s Hospital Colorado, the Colorado Health Foundation, the Colorado Office of Early Childhood, the Colorado Charter School Institute and numerous charter and independent schools. She was previously the founding executive director of Get Smart Schools, a charter school incubator and leadership development organization. Slothower was also the founder and board president of Denver Venture School, a Denver Public Schools charter high school with an entrepreneurship focus that opened in August 2008. In addition, she co-founded the Denver School of Science and Technology where she spent three years as chief financial officer prior to its 2004 opening. She also served as the vice president of finance and operations for the Colorado Children’s Campaign, an advocacy organization working to improve the lives of all of Colorado’s 1.1 million kids.
Slothower received bachelor’s degrees in history and literature from Harvard University. She earned an MBA with an emphasis in entrepreneurship from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. She is a member of the Garden Club of Denver and is an active volunteer with the Denver Botanic Gardens. Past Board of Directors memberships include History Colorado, where she served as vice chair, the Humanities Institute at the University of Denver, and the Webb-Waring Institute. She is the mother of two young children and her personal interests include traveling, hiking, and skiing.

Dr. Terese J. Lund
Dr. Terese J. Lund is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina. She is also Chair of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Wingate University. Her research interests center on child and adolescent development in diverse socioeconomic contexts, with a specific focus on parent-adolescent relationships, social-emotional problems, and positive youth development among adolescent girls. She teaches undergraduate courses such as Child Psychology, Adolescent Psychology, and the Psychology of Women.
Dr. Lund received the Dissertation Fellowship from the Lynch School of Education from Boston College in 2011-2012. At Wingate University, she has received numerous awards, including Registered Student Organization Advisor of the Year (2015), Summer Research Grant (2015, 2016), Student Government Association Unsung Hero Award (2016), Outstanding Academic Advisor Award (2016), Board of Visitors Grant: Experiential Learning Pilot Program (2017), Undergraduate Research Mentor Award (2017), and the Spivey Instructorship Award (2018-2019).
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Lund is the co-primary investigator of the empoWer program at Wingate University, which is funded through the Campus Action Project Grant by the American Association of University Women (2018, 2019).
Former Director of Outreach
Marcie Prokupek
Marcie joined the Compositive Primary team in 2018 as Director of Outreach, focusing on marketing, admissions, and operations. A fast starter and reflective leader, Marcie quickly gains an understanding of situations, needs, and obstacles, and then develops and implements strategic solutions. She is known for bringing together the right people and resources, including project teams, cross-functional staff, and external community partners, to launch new and manage existing programs and organizations.
Marcie’s multi-faceted career includes diverse business and community experience, including consulting to businesses in the education, finance, and restaurant industries, corporate banking, and not-for-profit development. As founder of Spring Consulting, Marcie provided client relationship, strategic, and operational support to clients including Graland Country Day School, OnePoint Accounting, and Tava Kitchen. She gained valuable experience managing relationships and making financial recommendations while employed with Geronimo Financial, M&I Bank, and First Chicago Bank. Marcie also spent several years working in non-profit development at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where she co-managed the annual giving program and generated exhibition sponsorships.
Community board work in recent years involves the Global Livingston Institute, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Kent Denver School, and Graland Country Day School. Other volunteer experience includes Young President’s Organization, Teach for America, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Children’s Campaign, and Webb-Waring Institute. Marcie earned an MBA from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Northwestern University. She has two daughters and enjoys traveling, the arts, and being active (yoga, cycling and running are current favorites) in her free time.

Linnea Krizsan
Linnea Krizsan began her career over twenty years ago as a museum educator at The Brooklyn Museum in New York. Since then she has taught elementary school, coached teachers and leaders, designed curriculum and worked in a wide variety of educational contexts. Linnea has served in many roles with Denver Public Schools as a founding teacher at The Odyssey School–an Expeditionary Learning charter school, a Teacher Effectiveness Coach, a Gifted and Talented teacher, and an International Baccalaureate Coordinator. She graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and received her Masters of Curriculum and Instruction from University of Colorado Denver. When she’s not working to make schools more creative and innovative, she can be found kayaking with her two boys, biking with her husband, or laughing with her book club.

Betsy Callaway Considine
Betsy Callaway Considine is a leader in education reform. She is committed to serving the Colorado community and has served on a variety of boards, including the Catholic Foundation, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Denver Botanic Gardens, Regis Jesuit High School, Ricks Center for Gifted Children at the University of Denver, Seeds of Hope Foundation, and the Women’s Foundation of Colorado. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a master’s in business administration from Harvard.
Betsy is the founder of Compositive, a national movement focused on “whole child” education for grades K-12. This new education model is based on peer reviewed research, as well as the principle of increasing children’s capacities to reflect and learn, recognize and act, care and connect, and engage and serve. This integrated approach empowers children to lead lives of personal excellence. In conjunction with her work on Compositive, Betsy is launching a unique Pre-K – 5th grade school in 2019. It features a student-driven, inquiry-based educational program. The Compositive school focuses on helping children develop critical thinking skills, flexibility, resilience, internal motivation and a commitment to service.
In addition to education innovation, Betsy’s experience covers the worlds of politics, religion, community service, women’s issues, ranching and family. She worked on multiple presidential campaigns, did a stint in the White House and ran her own construction company.
Betsy was born and raised in rural Georgia, and her family’s roots go back seven generations in Harris County. She is married to entrepreneur and former Colorado State Senator Terry Considine. The Considines, who have lived in Colorado for 38 years, enjoy spending time at their ranch in Western Colorado with their three adult children and their families.
Norma Hafenstein, Ph.D.
Norma Hafenstein, PhD is the Daniel L. Ritchie Endowed Chair in Gifted Education, Teaching and Learning Sciences Department, Morgridge College of Education, University of Denver. Dr. Hafenstein is lead faculty for gifted education, Full Clinical Professor in the Teaching and Learning Sciences department. She advises masters and doctoral degree students in education of the gifted and teaches graduate courses including Creativity: Theory and Practice, Psychological Aspects of the Gifted, Curriculum for the Gifted, Program Development, Leadership and Communication in Gifted Education, Instructional Strategies for the Gifted, Twice Exceptional Learners, and Research as Problem Identification, Intervention, and Application.
Dr. Hafenstein serves as a member of the Colorado Department of Education’s Gifted and Talented Endorsement Standards Committee. She consults with schools across the country providing teacher training, curriculum design, and program development.
